The Quest
The genealogical search for my ancestors began in 1999. They
have been traced back to my Great Great Grandparents George and Melissa Lifford Hearst who raised their family in Greenwood,
South Carolina. There is no knowledge about when the two were married. Grandpop George was born in 1860. Further research should provide information about when
Grandmom Melissa was born or died. To this union were born nine
children: seven boys and two girls. They were George Thomas, the eldest son, James Robert, Robert, William, Joseph, Lillie Melissa, the eldest daughter, Emma Lee,
Allen, Benjamin, the youngest son Benjamin.
George, James, William, Joseph, Lillie, Emma, Allen, and
Ben married and had a total of 12 children; eight girls and four boys. They raised their families in Greenwood,
SC, Greenville, SC, New York, Philadelphia, Atlanta,
GA, and California. During intense research, no information was found
about the offspring of one son, Robert. However, there is a possibility that the
family members who coordinated the 2003 Reunion are from his branch of the tree.
Take a moment to review photographs of my Great Aunts and Uncles, George
and Melissa's children that appear on the next two pages. The photo below is of Grandpop George as he lay in his casket.
He transitioned to another life in 1928. While the picture may seem crude, it tells a story about the practice of propping a
deceased's casket on the front porch so that family and friends could openly bid farewell to their loved one. After reviewing
the photos, take a moment to read the history that was gleaned from the 1910 Census. The Census tells the story.
